Scope and Content
Business ledgers of the general store belonging to J. A. Thomas of Maben, Webster and Oktibbeha Counties, Mississippi. The business, later known as J.A. Thomas and Son, was the longest operating business in Maben at the time of the death of J.W. Thomas, son of J.A. Thomas, in 1961.

Biographical Note
John A. Thomas, son of Dr. A.H. Thomas and Marthe E. Walker Thomas was born in 1853 Lowndes County, Mississippi. He and his wife Carrie Elizabeth Thomas had J.W. Thomas, J.A. Thomas, Carrie M. Thomas (Coleman), Emma B. Thomas (Mrs. R.A. Reed), and Laura Thomas.
J.A. Thomas became a dry goods merchant in 1870 in Webster County, and formed a partnership with hus brother, J. K. Thomas, in 1888. Operated as J. A. Thomas and Brother until death of J. W. Thomas in 1895. Operated as J. A. Thomas, 1895-1909, and as J. A. Thomas and Son, 1909-1961. Thomas died in 1923 Webster County, Mississippi.
