Biographical Note

Hodding Carter III, son of Hodding Carter II and Betty Werlein Carter, was born in New Orleans in 1935 and grew up in Greenville, MS. After graduating from Princeton University in 1957, he joined the United States Marine Corps. Since 1959, he held numeorus positions in media and politics, including an appointment as the State Department spokesperson by President Jimmy Carter, which led to his association with the Iran hostage crisis and its handling. He served as a Professor in Leadership and Public Policy at UNC-Chapel Hill starting in 2006, taking on responsibilities that included chair of the UNC Press Development Council, membership in the Faculty's Honorary Degree Committee, and involement in multiple projects with the Center for the Study of the American South. Hodding Carter III died at 88 years of age on May 11, 2023.
