Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of photographic slides and contact photographic sheets documenting Blake’s work in the field of landscape architecture. It includes tools that he used as well as his sketches of landscaping work.

Biographical Note

Edward L. Blake Jr., was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in 1947 and grew up in Mississippi. He received his undergraduate degree in landscape architecture from Mississippi State University in 1970. He later became a founding principal of The Landscape Studio of Hattiesburg. Blake taught at Mississippi State University from 1977 until 1984 when he became the first director of The Crosby Arboretum.

Blake was best known for his work in ecological planning and design, and for his focus on the creation of environmentally sustainable places. Another key aspect of his style was incorporating art into his projects.

Edward Blake died on August 29, 2010, in Hattiesburg, MS.
