Historical Note

Chattel slavery was practiced in America from the colonial era to 1865, when it was outlawed by the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution following the American Civil War. The receipts in this collection reflect the grim realities of chattel slavery, and are examples of enslaved persons being taxed and sold as property.
