Biographical Information

The Beachums were a farm family in Itawamba County. William Beachum served as the Sheriff of the county before the Civil War. (Source: Laws of the State of Mississippi: Appropriations, 1864) Some members of the Beachum, Galloway and Cook families, including William Beachum and his second wife, Arabella Davis Galloway, moved to California in 1872. James Monroe Beachum, son of William Beachum and Jane Burleson was born in 1842 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. He enlisted in the Confederate Army the 2nd Regiment of Mississippi infantry, Company C, as a private in 1861 and mustered out as colonel in 1865. He sustained an injury at the Battle of Gaines Mill in 1862, and was captured at Gettysburg, and sent to Fort Delaware.

He married Rhoda Schumpert in 1866 and together they had the following children: Mary Jane Beachum, Rebecca Belle Beachum, George W. Beachum, Alice Frank Beachum, John M. Beachum, James Swep Beachum, and Jesse Dudley Beachum.

Alfred L. Gallaway (1841-?), son of John and Mary Galloway enlisted in 1861 in Saltillo, MS, and mustered out as a private. He was cousin to James Monroe Beachums via Beachum’s step-mother, Arabella Davis Galloway.
