Scope and Content

Papers of Scott, educator, of Mississippi. Correspondence with relatives and friends, chiefly in Mississippi; clippings concerning the Scott family; incomplete file of Normal College News (1919-1921) edited by Scott, a faculty member of the Mississippi State Teachers College, Hattiesburg (now University of Southern Mississippi); proceedings (1877) of the first annual convention of the Mississippi State Teachers Association; and biographies of presidents of the Mississippi Educational Association (1884-1942) by Oliver Shaw. Includes letters (1916-1919) of two of Scott's sons in World War I, and letters (1920-1925) of another son, from West Point Military Academy.

Biographical Note

Scott was born on 4 April 1868 in Copiah County, Mississippi to Martha Eveline Scott and Dr. Zachariah James Scott. Throughout his life, he served as a teacher; attorney; Superintendent of City Schools in Brookhaven, Mississippi; a leader in the Mississippi Teachers Association; and the first Vice President of the Mississippi Normal College (now the University of Southern Mississippi). In 1895 (approximately), Scott married Helen Gaines Caden. The couple was married for 54 years and produced four sons: Earl Lynwood Scott, Edward Fulton Scott, Charles Watson Scott, and unknown.
