Biographical Note
George Whitfeld Simmons was born on 26 September 1831 in Perry County, Mississippi to James and Lucinda Turner Green Simmons. In 1859, he married Sarah Lucinda Jane Cooper Simmons, who was born on 24 September 1840 in Hinds County, Mississippi to John Oliver and Lydia Jacob Cooper. Together, they parented 15 children, one of which was Dayton Cooper Simmons, the father of Williams James Simmons (the donor of this collection). S.C. Simmons died on 4 September 1887 in Carpenter, Mississippi. Her husband followed her in death on 6 February 1898 in Carpenter, Mississippi.
