Content Description

The Russell Gaston Sheet Music collection contains the musical materials accumulated by Russell N. Gaston. The collection is divided into two series: Composition Books and Sheet Music. The Composition Books series includes the works and publications of various composers anywhere from 1904-1982 in a compilation of songbooks of different sizes and genres. Similarly, the Sheet Music series contains an assortment of materials from 1890-1987 with a variety of composers/artists and many different music genres, anywhere from Christian hymns to folk rock. Gaston’s collection spans several countries and contains copies of materials from classical composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frédéric Chopin, Claude Debussy, etc.

Biographical Note

Russell N. Gaston, 70, died May 1, 2014, at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, with Dr. Martin Lifer and Freddie Raspberry officiating. Burial will follow in Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to service. Mr. Gaston was formerly the secretary and treasurer of East Mississippi Lumber Company, Inc., and a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was formerly Vice President of the Bank of Oxford and received a bachelors degree from the University of Alabama in piano and organ. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Russell Gaston and Mary Gene Gaston; and one brother, Sam W. Gaston. He is survived by his brother, Andrew Gaston of Starkville.
