Scope and Contents
Typed transcript of a history written by C.W. Babbit of the Ist Regiment, Engineer Troops, Army of Northern Virginia, concerns Lee's surrender at the close of the war. Transcribed by J.P. Sessions, March 22, 1944, recopied by Elizabeth Sessions Power (1960) and Dorothy Sturdivant Cavin (1960).

Biographical Note
Charles Winthrop (C.W.) Babbit, son of Charles Winthrop Babbitt (1799-1837) and Frances Brooks Newman (1806-1887) was born in July 1835 in Natchez, MS. He was a 1st Lietenant in the Natchez Rifles, Co. E., 4th Louisiana Battalion, Gibson’s Brigade, He married Alinia Grigsby Darst (1846-1873) in 1864, and they had the following children: Charles Darst Babbitt (1865-1922), James Surget Babbitt (1868-1884) and John Walter Babbitt (1870-1945). He also had a daughter, Frances Newman Babbitt (1878-1908), with his second wife, Amanda Babbitt.
After the war Babbitt had a career as a city engineer for Natchez civil engineer in SW Mississippi and Louisiana. He died in 1903, after suffering stroke while working in the Natchez City Cemetery.
