Scope and Content
Correspondence, speeches, notes, organizational materials, publications, newspaper clippings and other materials created and collected by Dora Adams (1912-1990), a community activist from West Point, Mississippi. Dora Adams was interested in civil rights, political issues, and the welfare and safety of the citizens of West Point, Mississippi, and other areas. Dora Adams was the coordinator of the Clay County Welfare Rights Organization. The Adams papers bulk with national, state and local organizational materials.

Biographical Note
Dora Johnson Adams, daughter of Willie Augustus and Fannie Johnson, was born on March 9, 1912, in Carollton (Pickens County), AL. The family moved to West Point, MS when she was 7. She was educated at Pickens County Training School, Waverly Elementary School, and the Ministerial Institute and College in West Point. She married Isaac T. Adams in 1931. She was a member first of Union Star M.B. Church, and then St. Matthews Temple C.O.G.I.C, where she was a member for over 40 years. After taking an early retirement due to illness, Adams became a civil rights activist. She was an active member of numerous state, local and national organizations, including the NAACP, the Freedom Democratic Party, SNCC and COFO. She served on the board of Legal Services and Clay County Community Development, and headed the Clay County National Welfare Rights Organization.
Adams passed away on February 7, 1990, in Columbus, MS, and was survived by two sons, four daughters, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The collection was doonated in 1990 and processed then by the Manuscripts Dept.
Preservation Note
Newspaper clippings were photocopied and the originals discarded. Metal staples and paper clips were replaced with Plastiklips.
