Scope and Content

The collection includes miscellaneous materials concerning Shaeffer's Chapel Methodist Church, located eight miles southwest of Columbus, Mississippi. The collection includes a history of the church written in 1952 by Olin B. Looney. This history contains a copy of the property deed of the church. The history also contains a register of members and a list of pastors, presiding elders, and church school superintendents. The collection also includes the Official Membership and Church Record of members, marriages, and births. The collection includes minutes of Official Board meetings of 1963 and an annual summary for 1963. Also included are two newspaper clippings concerning Shaeffer's Chapel.

Historical Note

Shaefer Chapel United Methodist Church is located in Columbus, Mississippi. While the Church's founding dates back as far as 1820, Shaefer's Chapel was erected in 1878. The construction of the building is often credited to endeavors by Reverend George Shaeffer. The land on which it stands (approximately two acres) was deeded to the trustees of Shaeffer’s Chapel by Colonel John Gilmer. These trustees were Thomas A. Evans, Henry Foote, and W.B. Ferguson.
