This collection consists of fourteen boxes of correspondence, ephemera, photographs, and scrapbooks related to Ulysses S. Grant, Julia Dent Grant, their acquaintances, and family members. It is arranged in five series: Correspondence and Ephemera; Photographs, Scrapbooks, oversized, and Addition I. The first two series have additional Sub-Series that break the material down into specific types which are then arranged either chronologically or alphabetically by topic. Series V: Addition I contains materials donated by Grant family members in 2025. These materials came through the family of USG and JDG's youngest son Jesse R. Grant (Jr.).

Photograph of Grant's home in Detroit Michigan, where he lived in 1849-1850. The house is draped in funeral bunting and a large image of USG. On the verso is the Inscription "Mrs. Sartoris Compliments of R. A. Alger, Detroit Aug 1885." Mrs. Sartoris refers to USG's daughter Nellie Grant Sartoris. R. A. Alger was the United States Seantor from Michigan.
