Bill: Henry Saunders to Peleg Clarke Jr., 1862 March 14
Scope and Content
This collection contains a number of letters, documents, and records related to Peleg Clarke Jr. While the collection spans from 1853 to the early 1900s, a bulk of the collection was created over the course of the Civil War. The year 1862 is heavily represented. During this time, Clarke Jr. provided goods and services to the Union Army. However, in 1862 his steam sawmill was confiscated. A number of materials (even as late as 1866) in the collection relate to this incident. Historians and genealogists interested in the Clarke family of Westerly, Rhode Island may find this collection of benefit. In addition, Civil War scholars interested in the impact of the war on everyday citizens may also find this collection of interest.
