Scope and Contents
The Carl Schurz Collection contains documents and materials from his time during the Civil War to his death in 1906. Majority of the collection consists of correspondence from Schurz along with provenance correspondance detailing the collecting of Schurz items from 1999-2001. The contents of this collection range from original 19th century documents, to photocopies of items, and to an original 19th century broadside of one of Schurz's speeches.

Pay voucher, for Carl Schurz, July 17, 1863. Four pages.
A fully inscribed pay voucher for the month of June 1863 in the amount of $433.15, covering Schurz's salary of $220, as well as wages for four African American (listed as "Colored") servants at $11 each month, a clothing allotment for the servants of $2.50 each per month, and rations for all four, their names are James. A, George, Billy, and James.
