Refers to incoming president James Polk, the election, and the appointment of the new Secretary of State, suggesting James Buchanan would do a good job. He refers back to the "intrigue" surrounding Henry Clay's appointment to that office by John Quincy Adams 20 years earlier following the election Jackson lost to Adams.
