George F. Capps Letters

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-166

Scope and Contents

Letters of George F. Capps of Troy, Pike County, Alabama, to his wife Martha O. Capps from Alabama, Mississippi, and Ohio. Topics mentioned in an 1860 letter include his operation of a school for boys in Alabama, literary matters, and friends and family. Capps served in the Confederate Army in Company H, 42 Alabama Volunteer Infantry. His 1862 letters written from Mobile, Alabama, and Columbus and Artesia, Mississippi, concern the war, the surrounding countryside and conditions in Columbus, his problems proving his need for a military exemption to local authorities, and the medical condition of his brothers, John and James, who were apparently hospitalized in Columbus. Five 1869 letters were written during the time Capps was in medical school at the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio. These letters describe conditions at the school and in Cincinnati, his illness and family matters. An 1868 certificate signed by Holland N. McTyeire, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, documents George F. Capps’ appointment to the Office of Elder. Transcripts of letters are available in hard copy.
