Scope and Content

The collection includes correspondence, minutes, reports, surveys, newsletters, and other documents. The original collection (8 cubic feet) consists of the organization's official files. Earl Thomas, a former member of TCHR, donated his personal files (1 cubic foot) concerning the organization. The folders in the Thomas Addition are listed following the TCHR official files. Notable folders include the Black Appalachian Commission, Black Arts Music Society, Black Candidates, Black Child Development Institute, Black Methodists for Church Renewal, Black Mississippians Council on Higher Education, Black Voice (hot line), Court Orders – Interracial Marriages, Equal Rights Amendment, Lowndes County Project – Black Voice, Medger Evers Fund Inc., NAACP, National Council of Negro Women, Office of Minority Business Enterprise, Race Relations Reporter, School Desegregation, and other racial topics and issues.

Historical Note

The Tombigbee Council on Human Relations (TCHR) was a community action organization, which primarily concerned the Mississippi counties of Clay, Lowndes, Monroe, Noxubee, and Oktibbeha. Among the projects with which it was involved were the Starkville city election suit, prison reform in Lowndes County, voter education, and day care.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Larry Miller, last director of the Tombigbee Council on Human Relations, 1980 February 8. A later addition was added by Earl Thomas.

Materials have been housed in acid-free folders and enclosures. More in-depth preservation is needed such as removal of metal fasteners and isolation/removal of highly acidic materials.
